Volunteer

There are many ways you assist the efforts of the Wilderness Committee's Victoria chapter. In addition to taking part in any of our ongoing campaigns, please consider volunteering for one of the following positions:


Office

    Job Description: This job requires specific office skills and duties. Answering telephone calls, and recording telephone messages is very important. Photocopying and preparing and sending faxes is also required. Responsibilities for the office job also entails recycling, and garbage. Staff will often ask office workers for assistance with specific jobs needing attention.

    Qualifications:

    • Ability to send faxes and use photocopiers

    • Outgoing

    • Responsible

    • Trustworthy
    • Multi-phone line systems
    • Reliable

Store

    Job Description: Working in the store entails several important tasks and responsibilities. For this job, customers are priority. It is important to greet and serve customers who enter the store. You may be asked to provide the customers with information about the Wilderness Committee, or may need to assist others who come into the store with specific questions. Other responsibilities include managing stock, preparing posters, and maintaining the stores neatness. Cash sales and using the cash register are also part of this job description. You may be needed to open or close the store on occasion.

    • Sales experience is a plus

Phone Tree

    Job Description: The phone tree is an important means of contacting volunteers, the public, staff, members, and others. This job requires volunteers to be in charge of phoning specific individuals for special events, or informing the public of upcoming events.

    • Consistent
    • Organized
    • Well mannered
    • Friendly
    • Flexible availability

Events

    Job Description: This job requires well organized and enthusiastic individuals, with a willingness to share creative flare. Your participation will be crucial in community events for public awareness. Specific events will take place throughout the year, including holidays.

    • Work well with the public
    • Ability to work well with others
    • Enthusiastic and energetic
    • Organized
    • Knowledgeable of issues
    • Availability for travel outside of Victoria

Posters and Distribution

    Job Description: The purpose of this job is to inform and educate the public of current issues, and upcoming events. Postering and distribution requires dedicated, hard working volunteers. Wilderness Committee staff members will often specify distribution, and will have jobs for the distributors.

    Qualifications:

    • Responsible and reliable
    • Experience with distribution
    • Ability to work well with the public
    • Outgoing
    • Ability to pass along information and important notices

Booths

    Job Description: This job requires the setting up and taking down booths and displays. Booths are important for creating an awareness in the community about saving wild places and other wilderness committee actions. While stationed at the booth, memberships, donations and sales are encouraged. It is important to attract people to the booth, to ask them for support, and to let them know about the wilderness store and organization.

    Qualifications:

    • Sales experience
    • Working with the public
    • Educating the public
    • Responsible and on time
    • Ability to set up and take down a booth
    • Creative flare

Research

    Job Description: A variety of tasks will accompany research position jobs. Jobs will be appointed to research volunteers by staff members, when necessary. Research on organizations, political matters, and other issues will be addressed.

    Qualifications:

    • Ability to conduct independent research
    • Use of computers, photocopiers, fax machine etc.
    • Motivated and reliable
    • Organized

Displays

    Job Description: Assistance in the setting up and taking down of wilderness displays. Displays are often required for public events, and festivals. They are an important mechanism of informing the public of Wilderness Committee issues. Displays cannot be left unattended, and require a great deal of responsibility.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience with setting up displays
    • Ability to work well with others
    • Creative flare
    • Reliable and on time

Street

    Job Description: Volunteers are always needed for street activities, including street theatre. The purpose of this job is to inform the public, and create public awareness on current wilderness issues. Street activities should be well prepared, and should demonstrate knowledge and dedication of the committee. Most importantly, this job is based on public support, and should be fun.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience with drama, and other theatre events
    • Works well with others
    • Ability to work well with the public
    • Creative, and outgoing
