Cavendish Estate (Lot 1)

  • 10.5 ha consisting of:
    • 4.5 ha of maturing 2nd growth, mixed deciduous, and broadleaf forest
    • 2.5 ha of older (coniferous) forest, with some old growth.
    • 2.5 ha woodland ecosystem (open, mixed Garry oak, arbutus and Douglas fir)
  • Archaeological Features:
    • Shell middens were found in this site.
  • Current Status:
    • Parks Canada is currently the custodian of this land.
    • It was given to them as part of the Fort Rodd Hill agreement (along with Lot 5, 6 and 12).
    • The vast majority of the money from the agreement and investments has gone to Fort Rodd Hill, and it was at one time considered surplus to Parks Canada's needs.
    • Due to the fact that Parks Canada manages it, this land may be one of the easiest to protect.
  • Threats:
    • This lot is not under immediate threat, though there is currently no strategy for protection that adequately addresses the immense ecological and cultural value of this land. The land is not under any official legislated protection.
  • Preferred Protection Strategy:
    • This area has the potential to be a National Park Reserve or a National Wildlife Area, providing both green space and an ecological reserve that expands upon the Fort Rodd Hill National Historic Site.
    • This area needs concrete legislated protection to ensure its future.
