Lot 14 and Lot 3 (Due to their similar threats and close proximity)
- Lot 14
- Approximately 15 ha consisting of:
- 10.5 ha older 2nd growth coniferous forest (largely undisturbed for approximately 10years);
- 1.8 ha open and steep Woodland ecosystems (Garry oaks, arbutus, and Douglas fir);
- 0.75 ha forest surrounded pond known as Dunn's Nook;
- 0.5 ha is open rocky hilltop (Terrestrial Herbaceous ecosystem) ;
- 0.4 ha consists of 2 small wetland ecosystems;
- And the remainder consists of building sites and related clearings
- Archaeological Features:
- Shell middens are present here.
- Current Political Status:
- Sites 14 and 3 are currently in active use by the military, and the portion of the site that is adjacent to the Juan De Fuca Recreation Centre could be of interest to the centre for playing fields.
- Threats:
- This site is adjacent to both the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre and the Esquimalt Harbour shoreline, both of which are under heavy use and the expansion of either of the developments would impact this recovered ecosystem. The major threat appears to be the potential expansion of Juan de Fuca Recreation centre on the northwest side.
- A covenant protects a 10 m buffer along Ocean Boulevard, but this is not enough to fully protect this ecosystem.
- Preferred Protection Strategy:
- This lot is also adjacent to lot 5. These two lots together with the other pieces would comprise a very valuable protected area. This is an essential piece of the habitat corridor that must be kept in tact.
- It is integral to see this area become protected. Ecologically, it is a very valuable tract of land. No decisions should be made without third party consultation.
- The best possible protection will come as Lots 14 and 3 are designated as either a National Park Reserve or a National Wildlife Area.
