Lot 15, 16, and 17

  • Lot 15:
    • This lot fronts on Millstream Delta, a rich shorebird habitat.
    • 18 ha consisting of:
      • 8.5 ha: older coastal Douglas fir;
      • 1 ha: mixed woodland ecosystems (arbutus, and Douglas fir);
      • 3 ha: 2nd growth mixed broadleaf and deciduous forest
      • 1.5 ha: open meadow (archery range);
      • 2.5 ha: once cleared meadow, now partly replanted, and regenerating mixed forest;
      • And 1.5 ha of terrestrial herbaceous ecosystem, riparian ecosystem and shoreline.
  • Lots 16 and 17 are islands and their status is unlikely to change.
  • Archaeological Features:
    • There are 3 shell middens, and Soopolallie (a shrub usually found in the interior of BC and in the prairies) on lot 15.
  • Threats:
    • The Northwest portion of lot 15 may be declared surplus. This is the area directly adjacent to View Royal, where development may be very profitable.
    • The southwest side is adjacent to the Juan De Fuca Recreation Centre. There may be potential to develop trail-running routes through the region, thus protecting these ecosystems through an agreement with Juan De Fuca Recreation Centre.
  • Preferred Protection Strategy:
    • This land should be set aside as either a National Park Reserve or a National Wildlife Area. It comprises a valuable tract of land, and has strong potential to work as a boundary for urban sprawl in the southeast direction.
    • Lot 15 also connects to what may become a lineal Millstream Creek protected zone through CRD parks. This would protect the valuable creek area, and provide more legislated, concrete protection for the site.
