Rem 1 (#8)

  • 4 ha, including 0.4 ha of wetland.
  • Ecological attributes:
    • The northeast end of the site contains shattered limestone outcrops with karst attributes.
    • The majority of the site is covered in older coniferous forest, with some old growth trees.
    • The northwest end has a large number of western red cedars, an ecologically valuable and rare species.
  • Archaeological features:
    • There are shell middens on site.
    • In the limestone features, there are likely caves with archaeological artefacts.
  • Threats:
    • The site was explored by the Coalition for Federal Lands at the request of the DND, because the wetland was under consideration as a site for a recreation centre for military families. After examination the site was shifted off the wetland, but the construction exposed the southeast shore of the wetland to sunlight and degradation.
    • This area, like lots 4, 2 and 7 is largely under threat from expansion of the Belmont Housing centre.
    • Unfortunately, both the Juan de Fuca Recreation centre and the Belmont Military Housing complex flank this site. The expansion of either threatens to degrade this amazing land parcel.
  • Preferred Protection Strategy:
    • This area, like many of the others would be best protected through the establishment of a National Park Reserve or a National Wildlife Area.
