The Western Canada Wilderness Committee's Victoria chapter gave Victoria MP David Anderson an award Wednesday- over the telephone- for his efforts at preventing oil and gas development from taking place off B.C.'s coast.

"It's for over three decades of maintaining the moratorium," Ken Wu, campaign director for the environmental group's Victoria chapter, told Anderson over the phone.

Wu presented the award from Anderson's Victoria constituency office while the MP was in Ottawa.

Anderson has been active in ensuring the moratorium on offshore oil and gas development is maintained since it was implemented under Pierre Trudeau's Liberal government in 1971.

"I'm very flattered," Anderson said about receiving the award. "It's not yet time to get rid of the moratorium."

The brief over-the-phone award ceremony was part of the Western Canada Wilderness Committee's participation in the National Day of Action to Maintain the Moratorium on Offshore Oil and Gas Development off Canada's Pacific Coast. Leaflets were handed out to passersby outside federal Liberal MP's offices in almost 20 Canadian cities.
